3 Choices for Air Purifiers

If you are installing or replacing an air purifier in your home or business, you have three choices:

  • Ion generator
  • Electrostatic precipitator
  • UV air purifier

What are the differences? An ion generator disperses negative ions into the air that attach to particles in your home’s indoor air. These attached particles are attracted to your home’s surfaces, and they are removed when the surfaces are cleaned. An electrostatic precipitator also uses negative ions, but uses them in an enclosed chamber known as an ionization section. A small fan draws your home’s air into the precipitator where particles are charged. As the newly charged particles move through the chamber, they are collected on oppositely–charged metal plates. These plates need to be cleaned every three months to ensure the effectiveness of the unit.

Lastly, a UV air purifier is used to address biological contaminants. Unlike the other two air purifiers, a UV air purifier is actually UV lighting, so the purification comes from UV light bulbs. These bulbs are typically installed in your home’s ductwork or over the evaporator coils of your air conditioner. Which type of air purifier is best for you? This is something you can determine with the help of one of our indoor air quality pros.

When Is It Time for Repair or Replacement?

Air purifiers are made to work with your existing HVAC system, so it can be hard to know when yours is ready to be replaced. Here are some signs to keep in mind if you think your existing air purifier is on its way out:

  • Decrease in indoor air quality – if you have started to notice that the quality of your air has decreased recently, then it’s likely your air purifier isn’t working as it should. Depending on its age and how poorly it is operating, it may be time to replace it.
  • It’s gotten noisy – your air purifier shouldn’t make any noise. It is a component made to operate quietly and excessive noise is a good indication that something is wrong with the unit. Call our pros for help.
  • It’s using too much energy – the addition of an air purifier to your home should not be a big one in terms of energy usage. If you have found that your air purifier is eating up all kinds of energy, it may have a malfunction that needs repair or it may be hitting its retirement. Our experts can let you know what is happening and remedy the issue.
