Does your home have a carbon monoxide detector? Is it working properly? If your home has natural gas hookups for heating, cooking, hot water, or laundry, it is vital that you have a carbon monoxide detector in your home and you regularly check to ensure it is working properly.
Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that is toxic to people and animals, making it exceptionally dangerous. Only a working carbon monoxide detector can alert you and your family members if there is an unsafe level of gas leaking in your home.
If your home does not have a carbon monoxide detector, or if your carbon monoxide detector has stopped working, call Valleywide Cooling today to schedule installation of a new carbon monoxide monitor.
There are several types of carbon monoxide detectors available today. The three most common types are:
Electrolytic – electrolytic carbon monoxide detectors detect carbon monoxide in the home using electrochemical sensors. We recommend this type of carbon monoxide detector for most homes as they are the most sensitive and effective.
Metal Oxide – metal oxide carbon monoxide detectors heat up if carbon monoxide is detected. They have the added benefit of also being able to detect other types of poisonous gasses in your home.
Colorimetric – colorimetric carbon monoxide detectors use a colored strip to determine if there is an unhealthy level of carbon monoxide in your home. Although effective, these monitors may take up to two days to reset after going off.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends that you have at least one carbon monoxide detector in your home. For added protection, install one near every sleeping area and above the garage (carbon monoxide can leak out of your car’s exhaust). Be sure not to place them too close to fuel burning appliances such as your heater, gas heated dryer, hot water heater, or furnace. Locating your carbon monoxide detector at least 15 feet away will yield the best results.
