Downtown Gilbert – Even though it is only a few blocks, downtown Gilbert, AZ provides excellent restaurants, shopping and fun activities. From BBQ to Mexican and Italian, you’re sure to find something savory to eat. There’s also a regular farmer’s market and local musicians performing most nights.

 

Riparian Preserve located at the Water Ranch – If you enjoy bird watching or just want to experience the peacefulness of nature, take a trip to the Riparian Preserve. There are 180 different species of birds here, along with paths, picnic tables and other amenities.

 

Hale Centre Theatre – This family friendly venue has kids shows with seating situated so everyone has a great view.

There are countless activities to do in Chandler AZ. Listed below are some of the top attractions and activities to enjoy while in Chandler.

 

Chandler Fashion Center – If you’re in the mood to shop, the Chandler Fashion Center is one of the largest malls in all of Arizona. There are over 180 shops and eateries here including Macy’s, Apple Store, Michael Kors, Coach, Sephora, Lego, The Cheesecake Factory and California Pizza Kitchen. Other amenities include a movie theater, valet parking, and an outdoor lawn to relax or enjoy one of their summer events.

 

Zelma Basha Salmeri Gallery – One of the highlights of not only Chandler, but of the surrounding Phoenix area is this art gallery. Featuring 3,000 pieces of native and western art is worth visiting.  Some of the art you can see include Kachinas, oil paintings, woven baskets, pottery and other Native American Indian pieces. Another bonus, the gallery is free to attend.

 

KOLI Equestrian Center – Have you ever wanted to go horseback riding? At the KOLI Center you can ride side by side one another and enjoy a ride through the Gila River Indian Reservation. If you’re lucky, you might even see some wild horses while on your ride. The center is open all year round and you can book private tours too.

 

Veterans Oasis Park – This 113 acre park has lots of available hiking trails through the Sonoran Desert. There is also a Solar System hike for the kids that offers an exploration of the planets and our sun. The environmental education center here offers free classes for all age groups on wildlife preservation and the environment. There is a lake for fishing and plenty of opportunities for bird watching and star gazing.  

 

Tumbleweed Park – What sounds like a desert scene from a movie, this park is actually a wonderful place for families to visit. There are plenty of playgrounds, pavilions, and fields to play. The annual Ostrich Festival is held here which includes carnival rides and live music.

 

Arizona Railway Museum – This self-guided tour allows visitors to explore vintage trains and railroad artifacts. There is a steam locomotive, Santa Fe caboose and other railway cars to experience these historical train cars. In addition to daily visitors, the museum accommodates meetings and groups for unique events.

 

There’s plenty more to do and see here, like visit the great microbreweries, or the Crayola Experience which is a must for families with children.

Gold Canyon Arizona is an unincorporated city that is adjacent to Apache Junction and offers additional activities to explore in this area. Gold Canyon is home to the many “snow birds” which are residents who come to Arizona during the winter to escape the cold and snow in the northern states.

There are numerous activities to do while you are visiting this historical and unique location. Listed below are some of the top attractions and activities to enjoy while in Apache Junction and Gold Canyon.

 

Canyon Lake – One of the reservoirs that was created after the Salt River was dammed in 1925. While it is a smaller lake with a surface area of only 950 acres, there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy swimming, water skiing or boating. The lake is open year round and admission is free to the public. The marina at the lake provides tours on the Dolly Steamboat. There are a number of lunch or dinner tours offering great views of the surrounding canyon.

 

Lost Dutchman State Park – Named after the Lost Dutchman, Jacob Waltz and his legendary gold mine this State Park is just outside Apache Junction. The park provides scenic views of the Superstition Mountain, desert hikes, mountain biking and tales of visitors searching for the lost gold. 

 

Superstition Mountain Museum – This 4,900 sq. ft. museum was established to help preserve the lore and legend of the Superstition Mountains. In addition to information about the Lost Dutchman Mine, the museum allows visitors to learn about the native inhabitants of this land the Salado, Apaches and others. Tourists who are driving along Highway 88 (also known as the Apache Trail) can’t miss the museum and should take the opportunity to explore the history of this fascinating area.

 

Goldfield Ghost Town – What started as a mining town in the 1890s, today is a fun way for families to revisit the Wild West. Take a walk down Main Street, witness a gun fight, pan for gold and ride a narrow gauge train around. At the end of it all, stop by the saloon and enjoy a Mammoth Burger and a sarsaparilla.

 

Another popular activity in this area is hiking in the Superstition Mountain wilderness area and the Tonto Forest. There are several interesting trails with some of the most notable being the Hieroglyphic Trail and the Peralta Trail. Apache Junction and Gold Canyon offer exceptional golf courses and great restaurants and shopping to enjoy too!
